Whenever I hear the word "dirty bomb" I can't help it but have a mental image of a huge bomb wrapped in pages from a smutty porno magazine or something.

The most interesting thing about dirty bombs is that it seems to be primarily an instrument of propaganda (for both sides!)...
To cite the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC):
"Immediate health effects from exposure to the low radiation levels expected from an RDD [radiological dispersal device] would likely be minimal"

"A dirty bomb is not a “Weapon of Mass Destruction” but a “Weapon of Mass Disruption,” where contamination and anxiety are the terrorists’ major objectives."

For your personal associations I would advice to consult your local psychiatrist ;-)
