I had an interesting conversation with a former banker friend of mine (anonymous). In the seventies, anybody who walked in to their Hong Kong office with bags of cash was always welcome. No questions asked. In fact, dodgy clientele came from all over the world, including the Middle East. Dodgy, but not surprising as it is 'claimed' that HSBC has it's roots in the opium trade. Not that anything which underpins the global financial system is just. Capital makes no distinction between trading in drugs, oil, diamonds or sex. The only crime is getting caught.

If that's the case, then surely the Sultans have succeeded in turning Dubai into the Middle East's Hong Kong
